Nouveau wines are traditionally from the Beaujolais region of France, where Gamay is fermented through carbonic maceration and is rushed to the markets on the third Thursday of November.  It is a reflection of the vintage and the efforts of a successful harvest season.  We decided to pay homage to this tradition and produce a wine in this carbonic style also made with Gamay. The wine was fermented through carbonic maceration - producing a wine with higher acidity and very little tannin.  Our Nouveau is bright and fresh, with wild raspberry, cherry, rhubarb, rose hips and a juicy finish. Pair this special wine with lighter dishes or your favorite holiday meal.

This classic Bordeaux blend is from the Massa Estate in Carmel Valley AVA and is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.  Each was harvested separately over the course of September and October 2019 and natively fermented in small batches. Once dry, the grapes were gently pressed and racked to French oak to age before the individual lots were tasted and a final blend created in the summer of 2020.  The wine returned to barrel and continued to age before bottling in July 2021, giving the wine a full 22 months in French oak (45% new).

Wine Club Exclusive

The Sangiovese was partially destemmed and natively fermented in our concrete tank.  Daily pump-overs were performed to enhance extraction, and once the fermentation was complete we sealed the tank and left the grapes to continue an extended maceration process for nearly 4 weeks before we drained the juice and pressed the berries, giving the wine a deeper and richer mouthfeel and structure.  The Cabernet and Sangiovese aged in neutral 500L French oak puncheons and were blended in the summer of 2020 and bottled in Aug. 2021.

THE MOUNTAIN is a big, bold blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The grapes were organically grown above 1200 feet elevation at the Massa Estate Vineyard in the Carmel Valley AVA, just a few miles east of Folktale Winery. This is the big brother of our red wine program. Unabashedly robust, this wine comes full of ripe blueberry, pomegranate, black cherry cola, cedar wood, cocoa, crème de cassis, granite minerality, sage and plums. The texture is full-bodied and rich with velvety tannins and a long finish. The Mountain is a force of nature that will benefit from aging.

Wine Club Exclusive

Harvested between 9/4 and 9/21, this wine is a blend of three incredible vineyards within Monterey County.  667, 777 and Pommard 5 clones came from Pelio vineyard, which is located on the ridge between Carmel Valley and the Salinas Valley.  It sits above the fog layer that blankets both valleys in summer mornings, keeping things cool and produces intense flavor and tiny berries – perfect for Pinot Noir.  943 and 777 clones came from Escolle Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands where deep alluvial deposits lend intense minerality and terroir into the wine.  Lastly, the classic Calera clone came from Eden Rift Vineyard in the Cienega Valley, which is loaded with limestone-rich calcareous deposits from the San Andreas Fault (running through the vineyard).  All these clones were hand harvested and natively fermented in small batches – some of which were fermented whole cluster (53% of the final blend).  Once pressed off, the individual lots were aged 6 months in French oak (10% new) before being blended and aged for another 10 months as a cohesive blend.  Bottled Feb 2021.

Grapes for this vintage of Joseph’s Blend were hand-harvested from 5 different vineyards in our region.  Each lot fermented in small batches and was gently pressed and racked to French oak barrels to age.  After 6 months, all lots were tasted and a final blend was created.  The wine spent another year in barrel before being bottled in Aug, 2021.  In this year’s blend, Grenache came from Ventana and Mission Ranch Vineyards (Arroyo Seco AVA), Syrah from Cedar Lane Vineyard (Arroyo Seco AVA) and Tondre Grapefield (Santa Lucia Highlands AVA), and Mourvedre from Sandy Lane Vineyard (Contra Costa County).

Harvested 10/9 from Mission Ranch Vineyard in Arroyo Seco, the grapes were sorted and natively fermented in a Concrete tank (destemmed fruit) and small bins (whole cluster fermentation) for nearly 2 weeks.  Both lots were gently pressed and blended before being racked into neutral French oak barrels and aged for 10 months before being bottled in Aug, 2021. Tondre Grapefield was planted in 1997 in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands and has been farmed Sustainably ever since.  We hand harvested clones 943 Pommard 4, and 115 from this site and natively fermented the grapes in small batches with minimal intervention.  Ripe cherry olallieberry, all spice and cardamom are lifted by a round, rich palate of sweet vanilla that lingers.

A collaboration wine crafted by Sam Berketa from Alpha Box & Dice, our partner winery in Australia, and Folktale’s own, David Baird. While the adults weren’t looking, the two decided to make a special blend to commemorate the 2018 vintage. De-stemmed Cabernet Sauvignon was placed atop whole cluster Syrah grapes to ferment natively in 4 open barrels. The result is deep and complex, big and juicy - a truly special wine.

THE HOUND is a classic blend of Bordeaux varietals, combining 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 9% Cabernet Franc sourced 89% from Massa Estate Vineyard and 11% from Cedar Lane Vineyard . The not-so-little brother of our Reserve Bordeaux blend, this wine is complex and elegant with aromas and flavors of blueberry, mocha, floral lilac, frisée, dusty vanilla, brown sugar, creme de cassis, pencil lead, cedar wood, and hibiscus.  The texture offers nice richness with round and full tannins. The Hound is a beautiful, bold wine that will benefit from aging.
